Rune Pieces are essentially pieces of a rune that players can use for various purposes throughout the series. First introduced in Suikoden as a means to add more customization options in weapon upgrades, they were replaced by Weapon Runes in Suikoden II and the Sword of Magic Rune in Suikoden III. They reappeared in Suikoden IV, where they served a similar function, and Suikoden V, where they work completely differently.
There are five types of rune pieces, one for each element, that can be embedded into a characters weapon. In addition to giving the weapon an elemental affinity, they also boost stats or garner some abilities. A total of nine pieces can be embedded to a weapon, despite that, only Water and Earth Rune Pieces can be farmed and there are a very limited amount of Fire, Lightning, and Wind Rune Pieces that can be found in the game.
Due to a coding error, the the Earth and Wind Rune piece's are switched in function in the game's code. In addition, there are also Rune pieces for various stats like power, defense, fortune, and skill which are used as items to increase a characters parameters.

Suikoden V Edit
Rune pieces work very differently in this game. Most of them are pieces of a high level or rare rune like a Flowing Rune or Resurrection Rune. When four of them are obtained, they can be brought to a runemaster who can assemble them into a complete rune the party can equip. Often, this is the only way to obtain some of the game's strongest runes. The exception is the Blinking Rune Piece, which is a consumable item that allows the player to summon one party member from their castle while in dungeons or on the world map without speaking to Luserina.
Here is a list of all the assemble Rune Pieces:
- Flowing Rune
- Thunder Rune
