Katarina is the Vice-Commander of the Gaien Knights and the daughter of the Commander of the Gaien Knights, Glen Cott, who does not know he sired a child. She was a former pupil of now retired teacher Konrad.
Katarina's father never knew he had a daughter, but her late mother told her who her father was. She was looking for the right time to reveal the truth about her Mother's liaison with the Commander, but it never came due to Commander Glen's untimely death. After his death, she was looking to place the blame on someone for her father's death. In the end, Snowe's story about the Commander's disappearance and the glow on Lazlo's left hand, which was backed by Lord Vingerhut, gave her basis to condemn Lazlo. Lazlo was banished from Razril the very next day.
Later, when Snowe sold Razril out to Kooluk and gained a position in the Kooluk forces, Katarina was found washed up on the shores of the Nest of Pirates, battered and worn out. Lazlo, Paula/Keneth/Tal/Jewel came to see her while she was recuperating in Kika's room. She was horrified to see that Lazlo was still alive, and was prepared to accept her fate, if Lazlo had come to kill her. Paula and Keneth told her that they were finding ways to prove Lazlo's innocence, but Katarina still did not believe them. She told them about Razril's condition, leaving the three friends in a state of shock. Soon after Lazlo, Paula and Keneth found out the truth about Snowe, they had to face him in a naval battle.
When she was fully healed, she asked Lazlo if he had anything to do with the commander's death. She soon discovered that the Rune of Punishment consumed Commander Glen's life, and that Lazlo now had it on his left hand. Upon learning the truth, she joined up with Lazlo's forces. After the war, she returned to Razril and became the new commander of the reformed Razril Knights.
Two years after the Fall of Kooluk, a group of mercenaries were discovered to be masquerading as Razril Knights and attacking travelers around the Island Nations. She sought help via the Middleport Quest Guild, where Kyril and his entourage responded to their request.
After tracking down the impostors at the ruins of Fort El-Eal, Katatina and her Vice-Commander Keneth engaged them in combat and were soon aided by Kyril. After defeating the impostors, Katarina and Keneth agreed to join Kyril's group and helped them search for the Rune Cannon as it would be in the Island Nation's best interests.
While she was with Kyril's group she became pretty close with Jeane and Pablo due to their magical prowess. On the battlefield she noticed that Jeane did not display any magic fatigue and admired her ability. Because of this she invited Jeane to teach magic to the Knights in Razril but Jeane declined.
She returned to Razril after the Evil Eye was destroyed.

- Keen: You have done well by coming here. In this room, you may confess what is in your heart and accept proper judgement.
Katarina: I... see...
- Keen: Would you secretly inform me about anyone on board this ship who you think is causing problems?
Katarina: When the Commander... of the Gaien Knights passed away... I could only... condemn Lazlo... even though the Commander's death was not any fault of his... I just... I just wanted to turn my hatred against someone...
- Keen: Finally, quietly confess the things you wish to atone for, or all the things that you are thankful for.
Katarina: Glen, who was the Commander of the Gaien Knights, is my... father... But even the commander himself did not know that he had a daughter by my late mother... I had thought I would find the right opportunity to tell him of this... but it never came to pass... ... But it doesn't matter now. He'd surely be angered by a Vice Commander who only looks back at the past. From now on, I would like to be as much help to everyone as I possibly can be...
- Keen: Then, I shall pass judgement!
Katarina: Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I feel just slightly... less burdened.
Katarina: Aaaaaahh!! Am I... getting what I deserve?
